Organizations have a tempo, mood and cadence just like individuals and teams. Business – big “B” – does too: it’s just harder to put your finger on it.
While we may think about the mood of an organization as emanating from the top, it’s probably more complicated than that. While the leadership “mood shadow” from the C suite is well known, my favorite folks – the so-called “little people” who really make up an organization’s heart and soul – are critical for generating the feeling of the broader emotional state of any firm. And while the CEO may get her or his mood from a host of places (investors, analysts, family, etc.) the gestalt that is the sense of the body of the business gets its mood from an even broader array of influences.
Cherry blossoms are blooming across San Francisco this weekend. For the folks in my family, it may be January 31st but the mood says “Spring.”
And with these blossoms, hope, which has taking a bit of a beating in this recession, springs eternal.
